Orbem builds AI-driven MRI scanners that read the inside of biological material without cutting it open. Its main commercial application is poultry hatcheries, where the Genus Scale system determines the sex and fertility of eggs non-invasively, avoiding the culling of male chicks; the same imaging is applied to detecting internal defects in fruit and deformation, discolouration or dehydration in nuts, and the company is extending it into human health screening. It frames the market around the roughly 1.25 billion tonnes of food lost between harvest and retail. Founded in 2019, it is headquartered in Munich with a US office in Houston.
