Smith+Nephew is a British medical technology company that describes itself as a portfolio business focused on the repair, regeneration and replacement of soft and hard tissue. Founded in Hull in 1856 by Thomas James Smith, it now runs three global business units: Orthopaedics, covering hip and knee implants, robotics-assisted surgery and trauma products; Sports Medicine and ENT, covering joint repair, arthroscopy and ear, nose and throat procedures; and Advanced Wound Management, covering wound care, bioactives and negative pressure wound therapy. Named product brands include the CORI surgical system, JOURNEY II ROX knee, REGENETEN bioinductive implant, CARTIHEAL AGILI-C cartilage repair, ALLEVYN foam dressings, RENASYS EDGE negative pressure therapy and COBLATION airway technology. It reports revenue of about $6.2bn, spends around $296m a year on research and development, employs roughly 17,000 people and sells in about 100 countries. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker SN.
