Health & Safety Trainer / Officer The Health and Safety Trainer / Officer is primarily responsible for the development, coordination, delivery, assessment, and certification of training programs at Founders Metals Suriname's remote exploration sites in Sipaliwini. Reporting to the Country Manager Health and Safety, the role ensures that all site personnel are trained, competent, and certified to perform their duties safely and effectively. The position manages the site training database, training matrices, schedules, competency assessments, and certification processes. In addition, the incumbent supports the Health and Safety department through inspections, incident investigations, audits, compliance monitoring, and the implementation of Health and Safety programs and procedures. Approximately 80% of the role is dedicated to training and competency management and 20% to Health and Safety Officer responsibilities. All activities are performed in accordance with Founders Metals' Health and Safety standards, quality requirements, and applicable Surinamese regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities Training Needs Analysis & Training Matrix Development - Design and maintain function-specific training requirement matrices (e.g. driller, drill helper, mechanic, warehouse clerk, heavy equipment operator, ATV operator, UTV driver, security guard, geologist, and other site roles), defining mandatory certifications, refresher intervals, and competency standards for each function. Review and update matrices as roles, equipment, and regulatory requirements evolve. Training Database & Certification Records Management - Maintain and administer the site training database, recording completed training, certifications, licenses, and expiry/renewal dates for all personnel. Generate compliance reports and renewal alerts to ensure no employee operates without a current, valid certification. Maintain organized training files and documentation to support internal and external audit requirements. Training Scheduling & Coordination - Develop and manage the site training calendar, scheduling internal and external training sessions, refresher courses, and certification renewals in coordination with Department Supervisors and the Country Manager Health and Safety to minimize disruption to operations. Coordinate with external training providers, OEM trainers, and certifying bodies, and arrange logistics (venue, equipment, materials, travel) for training delivery. Training Delivery & Competency Certification - Deliver induction, orientation, and function-specific technical, safety, and skills training directly to personnel, including new-hire onboarding and equipment/vehicle operator certification (e.g. ATV, UTV, heavy equipment). Conduct practical competency assessments, certify personnel as competent to perform their function, and maintain assessment records to support certification decisions. Identify skills gaps and recommend additional training or remedial action. Health and Safety Officer Duties - Support the HS Team in day-to-day site safety activities, including conducting safety inspections, audits, and toolbox talks; participating in incident and near-miss investigations and corrective action tracking; and monitoring compliance with PPE, permit-to-work, and site HS procedures. Assist in the delivery of HS-specific training (e.g. induction safety training, emergency response, hazard awareness) and integrate safety competency requirements into training matrices and certification programs. Qualifications and Experience Highschool degree or higher vocational qualification (HBO level or equivalent) in Occupational Health & Safety, Human Resource Development, Education/Training, Mining/Engineering, or a related field. Recognized certification in Training/Instructional Design (e.g. Train-the-Trainer) is required. Recognized Health and Safety qualification (e.g. NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent) is required. Minimum 5 years of experience in a training or learning & development role, preferably in mining, exploration, construction, or heavy industry, including the development and administration of training matrices and competency frameworks. Minimum 2 years of Health and Safety Officer or equivalent HS experience. Experience delivering and certifying training across multiple functions is an asset, as is experience working independently in remote or off-site environments. Strong knowledge of adult learning principles, training needs analysis, curriculum/matrix design, and competency-based assessment methods. Working knowledge of occupational health and safety management systems, risk assessment, incident investigation, and permit-to-work systems. Proficiency with training database / LMS systems, and with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for developing training materials, matrices, and reports. Certified Trainer / Train-the-Trainer certification required. Health and Safety certification (e.g. NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent) required. Valid driver’s license category B required (C/CE and ATV/UTV operator certification an asset, to support hands-on operator training and assessment). First aid and CPR certification is an advantage. Working proficiency in Dutch and English is required; Sranan Tongo is an advantage. Strong presentation, facilitation, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to deliver technical and safety training to personnel with varying literacy and language backgrounds, and to communicate clearly with Department Supervisors and the Country Manager Health and Safety. Working Conditions Camp-based role at a remote exploration and mining site in Suriname, working a 5 days on / 2 days off rotation. Work conducted in a mix of classroom/training-room settings, workshops, and active field and operational areas across exploration sites in tropical Suriname: exposure to heat, humidity, noise, dust, and outdoor conditions during field-based training delivery and safety inspections. Role requires regular movement between site areas (drill sites, workshops, warehouse, camp) to deliver training and conduct HS inspections, and occasional travel to town/regional locations to coordinate with external training providers and certifying bodies. Full PPE (hard hat, steel-toe boots, safety glasses, gloves, high-vis vest) mandatory at all times in operational and field work areas.
