Senior Software Systems Engineer
Role: Senior Software Systems Engineer Location: San Diego, CA (in-office) Salary Range: $165,000 - $220,000 /yr + stock options, 401k matching, and other benefits Role Overview: Seasats' vehicles run on software that has to reach them reliably, wherever they are. From packaging new capabilities for shipping, to the pipelines that build, version, and deliver them to vehicles at sea, that foundation has to scale as we scale our fleet and our customer base. We're looking for a Senior Software Systems Engineer to build and own that foundation: release engineering, software and vehicle packaging, and the tooling that lets every engineering team at Seasats ship confidently. If you like being the person other engineers rely on to get software and vehicle updates out the door cleanly, this is a great fit. Role Details: As a senior member of the team, you'll help set technical direction for our infrastructure and raise the bar for reliability across the company. On a day-to-day / week-to-week basis, you will: Own the end-to-end delivery process for our software and vehicle software: versioning, build artifacts, packaging, and staged rollout Define and maintain our delivery pipelines, including build automation, artifact packaging, versioning schemes, and pre-launch qualification Implement and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform or similar) to keep build and deployment environments consistent and repeatable Build tooling to track rollout health and support rollback and recovery when a deployment doesn't go as planned Harden our packaging and delivery processes for security, reliability, and cost efficiency as our fleet and customer base scale Act as the integration point between vehicle software, cloud services, and third-party systems, making sure new builds and packages work together end-to-end before they ship Support and improve developer experience by streamlining environments, tooling, and workflows for the engineering org Support production systems and, at times, active vehicle missions Support deployment automation and packaging tooling used across the engineering org About You: 8+ years of experience in infrastructure, DevOps, release engineering, or platform roles, ideally owning delivery and packaging processes at scale Strong experience with cloud infrastructure and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar) Deep understanding of Linux systems internals, packaging formats, and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) as deployable units Experience building and maintaining delivery pipelines and build/packaging automation (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar) Experience with versioning schemes and artifact repositories (semantic versioning, package registries, or similar) Proficiency in Python, Go, or Bash for automation and tooling Demonstrated ability to independently scope and lead infrastructure projects Systems-level thinking: comfortable tracing how software, firmware, and hardware components on the vehicle interact, and able to spot where a change in one will ripple into another Track record of integrating tools, teams, and third-party systems into a single, cohesive workflow, rather than optimizing any one piece in isolation Strong technical communication skills, with the judgment to balance speed, reliability, and cost Bonus points if you have: Experience supporting robotics, IoT, or other fleets of remote/edge devices Familiarity with over-the-air (OTA) update and packaging systems for embedded or edge software Experience with GovCloud, ITAR/export-controlled environments, or other regulated infrastructure Experience with database administration (PostgreSQL, time-series databases) Familiarity with security scanning, compliance automation, and secrets management About Seasats: At Seasats, we're passionate about delivering maritime robotics solutions to redefine the maritime industry. Our primary products are unmanned surface vessels (USVs), designed to carry sensors at sea for months at a time. Our USVs provide persistent monitoring and data acquisition to defense, scientific, and commercial customers, and have autonomously crossed both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. After thousands of years in which the only way to gather information from the ocean was to put people on a boat, these uncrewed vessels are transforming how humanity monitors and interacts with the ocean. Here, you'll find the space and opportunity to do your life's best work. Along with your salary, you'll receive perks including: Stock options Competitive insurance (including a 99% employer-covered Gold HMO plan or other options) 401k matching up to 4% of salary Four free lunches per week An employee activity fund A pet-friendly office Unlimited/Flex PTO Hiring Notes: When applying, you'll be asked to provide a resume and answer a few screening questions. Please note that we are currently unable to sponsor employment visas, so candidates must be independently authorized to work in the United States. We appreciate diverse perspectives and life experiences, and we're committed to building a team that reflects a wide range of backgrounds.
